Global warming is turning soft roadside verges hard say road scientists.
The problem, first spotted in Scotland, has reached crisis point on the low side of adverse cambers across the highlands.
Hardening verges have also been reported in the Trossocks.
But drivers have been warned not to use verges for roadside picnics until further notice.
